Social Media: A Fail Proof Way to Kill Time

If you want a fail proof way to kill time, then social media is the answer. While some social media platforms have their uses, they have become a big distraction from the real world. Overall, they are a part of everyday life in one way or another. And you can kill time with each of them.

MySpace

MySpace is where it all began for my generation. If I am being honest, you could do so much more page customization on that platform than on Facebook. I mostly used MySpace to communicate with friends and sometimes meet new people.

I remember being able to customize pages with HTML(Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS(Cascading Style Sheets) knowledge. And also, we could add a music playlist to our page.

Furthermore, I am beginning to realize that my online presence is not what it used to be compared to the days of MySpace. Sometime last year, I logged in to see if my account was still open. Yep, still there. Much has changed since then; New ownership and stuff. I really should close my account because I don’t use it.

Facebook

People migrated from MySpace to Facebook, and Facebook became the pillar of social media. This platform is where I killed most of my time.

My use of Facebook was to keep in touch with family and people I used to know. And some of the memes I came across were very entertaining. The games that they offer are fun as well; a time killer indeed.

At the beginning of my blogging journey, I joined a blogging community to help me figure out what I needed to do to become better at blogging. Instead of providing genuine help for bloggers, it seemed more like a sales funnel for the creator(s) of the group.

A little over a year ago, I deleted my account. I was tired of all the political and COVID crap that would show up in my feed. It didn’t matter how much I tried to ignore it – those elements were just there.

I was hoping that deleting my account would bring back more in-person experiences. But it didn’t. However, it did free up some time for other things and became one less platform to manage.

Twitter

I have been working on using Twitter as one of the main ways to attract readers to this blog. And while Twitter hasn’t performed well for me, I continue to use it, hoping that readers will find me.

I commented on a tweet from Elon when he bought Twitter – that new accounts on the platform don’t get awarded viewership. And a lack of viewership is a problem when you want to share information with others. It would seem that you must post more frequently than I do, and I don’t post that often.

Instagram

Lastly, I have two Instagram accounts. A personal one, and the one I created for this blog. I read somewhere online that you should create social media accounts for your blog. However, I feel like Instagram is not a good fit for this blog at the present time.

I spend a lot of time on Instagram – more than I should. Looking through reels can be both entertaining and educational. But it also consumes time that I could be doing other things.

Conclusion

Social media doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon. There will be other platforms that come and go, and most of them will become ways to kill time. Remember to limit your time because it could distract you from more important things in life.

  1. 🙂 I never used MySpace, but I do remember using Facebook and Twitter.

When I joined WordPress, I eventually deleted Facebook and Twitter.

Hmm. I guess that it was my time to rid myself of those two social media networks.

    1. Thank you for commenting Renard.

It’s nice to see that I’m not the only one to remove Facebook from my life. Twitter will probably be the next platform I remove.

How long ago did you delete Facebook and Twitter?

          1. 🤔 Yes, I felt relieved.

However, at the time, the majority of the traffic that I was getting was from Twitter; that resulted in a drop in traffic to my blog.

          2. I bet. That’s how I felt.

Ouch, I don’t think any blogger likes to have a drop in traffic. I don’t get any traffic from Twitter. I believe only 1 view came from there.

If I may ask, does the majority of your traffic now come from the reader and organic searches?

          3. 🙂. Now that you mention it, I realized that I left Pinterest out of my post. I haven’t had traffic from Pinterest for months now 🤔. To be fair, I did forget to share my last 2 articles on there 🙈.
